Whew! What an exciting and busy weekend in Tonto Village.
Not only did the Village see a marked increase in people population but in quads and dirt bikes and noise. The biggest event was the Hellsgate Labor Day weekend barbeque at the fire station. The event turned out to be the biggest fund-raiser, thanks to the support of everyone who attended and participated one way or another to help make it a huge success, and a very special thank-you to all of the spouses of the Fireflies who pitched right in wherever help was needed.
The Hellsgate Fire Department and its auxiliary, the Fireflies, wish to thank everyone for their support.
A special thank-you to the businesses that so generously contributed to the silent auction items: Ace Hardware, Walmart, Plant Fair Nursery, Central Arizona Supply, Chapman Auto Center, Quilting Sisters, Craft Boutique, Radio Shack, Mazatzal Casino, Payson Candle Factory, Kathy Marx, Vicki Grootegoed, Fletcher’s Auto, Dara Sutton and Joan Norem.
The ever-popular raffle items were announced, and the biggest-ticket item — the Stihl 20-inch chain saw — was won by Jack Grissman of Thompson Draw I. The handmade quilt was won by Summer Dooley from Phoenix, and the diamond necklace and earring set was won by Dave Lloyd of Hunter Creek. Congratulations to the winners.
A very special thank-you to Jim Dooley of Ellison Creek for his generous donation of $100. He specifically said he wanted to “feed the children” at the barbeque so that the little ones could eat free. A big thank-you for the kind and thoughtful gesture.
An appreciation luncheon will be held for the Fireflies on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Mazatzal Casino at 11 a.m. All members of the auxiliary are invited to attend and wear your t-shirts.
Another ‘Friends and Family’ CPR class will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Hellsgate Fire Station #21 in Star Valley. I personally took the first class held last month and it is a very worthwhile class. Who knows, maybe one day you may be able to help save a life. Sign up with Karen Carlen by telephone at 474-3835.
A few weeks ago, the Domino Divas held a competition with the Christopher Creek domino players and the winners were announced and reported in my column, but I forgot to add the ‘Best Recipe’ winner. Penny Wells, a former Christopher Creek resident and now a part-timer, was the winner for her Diabetic Applesauce Raisin Cake.
The ingredients are: 2 cups water, 2 cups raisins, 1 cup applesauce, 2 eggs, 2 Tbsp. artificial sweetener, 3 Tbsp. sour cream, 3/4 cup oil, 1 tsp. soda, 2 cups flour, 1-1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, 1/2 cup chopped nuts, 1 mashed banana. Any dried fruit can also be added.
For high altitude, add 1/4 cup extra flour. Soak raisins in 2 cups water until plump and some water evaporates. Add applesauce, eggs, sweetener, sour cream, and flour. Mix well. Add nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Mix well. Add chopped nuts and pour into 9x13 inch pan sprayed with Pam and bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Thank you, Penny, for that delicious cake recipe.
Stu Stewart of Tonto Village I has found a ‘Spyder’ bicycle that looked as if it was wrecked or run over. Stu has repaired the bike and now has it at his home on Standage Drive. If you know who the owner is, please call Stu at 478-4842.
On Sept. 19, Elaine Tetzke of Tonto Village III will celebrate her birthday. On Sept. 22, Jenna Meeker daughter of Rick and Theresa Meeker of Tonto Village II, will add another candle to her birthday cake. Gloria Alliger of Tonto Village III and one of the people on the Hellsgate Fire Board will have her big day on Sept. 23. Happy birthday to all of you and here’s hoping your birthday will be wrapped in smiles.
