To beat the Mingus Marauders, the state’s no 2 ranked 4A II football team, the 3A Payson Longhorns had to play almost a perfect game.
What resulted Friday evening in Cottonwood was a 33-12 loss to the Marauders that dropped Payson’s mark to 2-1 for the season.
Early on, the Horns were their own worst enemy committing errors, especially on special teams, that led to Mingus scores.
On the opening drive Payson went three-and-out and into punting formation. Mingus’ Cody Green blocked the punt attempt that was picked up and taken into the end zone to give the Marauders an early 6-0 lead.
Later, Mingus upped the count to 13-0 and then blocked a Payson field goal that would have gotten the Horns on the scoreboard.
After Mingus built a 19-0 cushion, the Horns pulled to within 19-12 to make things interesting.
But in the final going, the Marauders superior depth began to pay off as they upped their lead to 26-12 and then 33-12.
In other 3A scores, Round Valley won a thriller over Florence 36-35 and Blue Ridge humbled Holbrook 48-0.
