Control Road bridges project open house

The Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Highway Division is hosting an open house at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Julia Randall Elementary School, 909 W. Main St., Payson to discuss a proposed multi-bridge replacement/rehabilitation project along Control Road in the Tonto National Forest, north of Payson.  

The agency is soliciting public comment on this project until Sept. 30. The anticipated construction may begin as early as spring 2011.

Those unable to attend are encouraged to send comments or questions no later than Sept. 30, to Tom Puto, Project Manager, FHWA-CFLHD, 12300 W. Dakota Ave., Lakewood, CO 80228 or email tom.puto@dot.gov.

Payson Education Center schedules open house

The Payson Education Center will have an open house from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14. Light refreshments will be served.

PEC is an alternative high school serving students in the Payson and surrounding areas. It is located on 112 W. Cedar Lane in Payson.

Jewelry sale

There will be a $6 jewelry sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15 and Thursday, Sept. 16. Rings, belts, earrings, watches, gold and silver chains, necklace/ earring sets, bracelets, totes, scarves, children’s gift items, designer-style sunglasses, readers, leather goods and more will be available at the Payson Regional Medical Center lobby.

Thrift store sale

The Pine/Strawberry Thrift Store on Highway 87 at the Pine Community Center will have a bag sale on all clothing from Sept. 15 through Sept. 18. Shoppers may fill a standard size bag with clothing; including men’s, women’s and children’s garments, shoes, purses and belts. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

Soccer benefit

The Payson High School soccer teams are having a fund-raising event at Gerardo’s Italian Bistro, 512 N. Beeline Highway, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet of salad, pizza and pasta for $6.99 per person, or $5 for students.

Payson Schools in-service

Payson Unified School District will observe a half-day in-service day on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Julia Randall, Payson and Frontier Elementary Schools dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served to students before they depart. Rim Country Middle School dismisses at 12:30 p.m. after serving lunch. Payson High School dismisses at 12:05 p.m. without serving lunch, followed by a brief, optional Club period. The RCMS/PHS buses depart from the schools at 12:35 p.m.

Payson Center for Success High School does not observe the half-day inservices and will operate on its regular schedule.

Register for next GED test now

Space is available for GED testing on Saturday, Sept. 18. Anyone wishing to take the test must pre-register at 719 S. Beeline Highway in Payson by noon on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

The cost is $70 for the complete test. Retakes are $10 per subject.

Future dates for testing in 2010 are: Oct. 16, Nov. 20, and Dec.18.
