Plans are currently being made for the 2011 Gila County Spelling Bee. Linda O’Dell, Gila County superintendent of schools, looks forward to sending a strong, competitive speller from Gila County to the Arizona State Spelling Bee in March 2011.
Registration is now under way, and must be completed by Oct. 15, at the Scripps National Spelling Bee Web site, www.spellingbee.com.
The fee to register is $99. An additional charge of $7.50 has been added if you pay by check, for a total of $106.50, which may be reimbursed by the office of the county superintendent of schools. An additional $75 fee will be assessed for late registration.
The Gila County Spelling Bee will take place at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 4, 2011 at the Miami High School Auditorium with a tentative back-up date to be announced in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Students from public, private and charter schools are eligible to participate in the spelling bee. Any school that has not received information about the spelling bee from the Arizona Educational Foundation should contact Julie Vasquez at (928) 402-8783 for assistance.
Home-schooling groups are encouraged to participate. Interested parents or groups who are home-schooling children in grades 3-8 should call Julie Vasquez, at the number above, for further information, including reimbursement for registration.
The 2010 Arizona Spelling Bee champion was Anjali Nair an eighth-grader at McKemy Middle School in Tempe who out-spelled 29 other finalists at the Arizona Spelling Bee on March 27.
