Two of the most often asked questions among weekend anglers are: what are they biting on and how can I catch them? Well, tomorrow is the opportunity to ask 15 of the best bass fishermen in the world those very questions and more. The Town of Payson is hosting an FLW Fun and Media Day at Green Valley Park starting at 10 a.m., and these anglers will share some of the secrets that have brought them success at the biggest bass tournaments in the country.
FLW Outdoors is one of two major bass circuits in the United States hosting nationally televised fishing events that many of us watch on the weekends. The initials FLW originated from bass fishing legend Forrest L. Wood, who was the founder of Ranger bass boats more than 40 years ago. During this time, he has been instrumental in developing competitive bass fishing to what it is today, where an angler can win up to a million dollars for a championship like the Forrest Wood Cup.
FLW Outdoors takes great pride in making their involvement in the fishing industry very family oriented, and tomorrow at Green Valley Park will be the perfect example. The major sponsor of the FLW Western Series is the National Guard, and it will have its entire mobile unit, called the “Fun Zone” — which includes climbing walls, simulated fishing games, wave riders, and much more — at the park for Saturday’s event.
The National Guard will have on display a full-sized replica of NASCAR Number 88, which is Dale Earnhart Jr.’s racing machine, plus the motorcycle called the National Guard Chopper. Both of these vehicles will be making the rounds of the local high schools that are within a radius of 80 miles of Payson. They will also be shown on the final day weigh-ins at Chapman Auto Center at 4 p.m., Sept. 25.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department will have a free family fishing day at Green Valley Lake on Sept. 18, with loaner rods available for everyone who would like to try their luck at catching a late-summer bass. Make sure to view the AGFD aquarium — where numerous giant trout will be swimming — the simulator fishing games and other wildlife displays.
There will be an autograph-signing session, which was made possible by Del Taco sponsoring sports cards that will be given away by the local Del Taco and participating bass pros.
At 2 p.m., the Payson High School modern choir will sing the national anthem, which will begin the media portion of the day where anglers will be interviewed by numerous TV, radio, and newspaper outlets. This is also a time where the crowd may ask specific bass fishing questions of the anglers who are often seen on the fishing shows throughout the country.
There will be numerous sporting goods display booths with the latest fishing and hunting equipment as well as a complete line of Ranger bass boats and Arctic Cat ATVs. The day will provide something for everyone in the family, and at 5 p.m. the award-winning country and western band, 2nd Shift, will entertain the crowd with a free concert in the park. This will be a day of quality family fun, so make sure to attend the FLW Fun Day at Green Valley Park with the many activities including numerous drawings for free fishing equipment. The featured item being a custom built rod from locally owned Rim Country Rods, presented by owner Jim Goughnour.
The FLW Day will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. and concludes with the concert in the late afternoon.
Bring your friends and enjoy Green Valley Park in the great outdoors, God’s creation.
