Missing: Library Piglet; Police Looking For Thief

Missing: Half a foot tall, round belly, two broken pink ears, curly tail, brown ceramic body with sign that reads ‘Feed the Pig.’

On Thursday morning, staff at the Payson Public Library discovered Wilbur, the coffee donation piglet, was gone.

The pig was last seen Tuesday morning standing tied to the coffee machine near the library’s front doors.

Reference Librarian Bessie Tucker noticed Wilbur was gone when she went to stock the coffee station with mugs Thursday morning.

Tucker believes Wilbur was swiped as early as Tuesday.

“It had to weigh at least 20 pounds,” she said. “How someone could lug that thing out of here with all of us around is an enigma. When I first realized it was gone I thought it must have been an April Fool’s joke.”

The last time staff cashed Wilbur out was several months ago, so Tucker believes it holds at least $50.

A flea market find, Wilbur diligently collected donations through the years from giving library patrons grateful for a cup of coffee.

Thursday morning, Payson police officer Josh LaManna took down Wilbur’s general description. So far, police have no leads.

Two weeks ago, police recovered a coffee can of quarters stolen from the Payson Roundup after a man cashed the quarters in at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino at 4:30 a.m. Tucker wonders if someone will try to cash in the pig.
