Tonto Basin Ready To Hold Its Second Wild West Days

Las Vegas has roulette and Tonto Basin has the chicken drop.

While not as neat as the Vegas gaming staple, the chicken drop promises gamblers just as much fun.

Pick your lucky number, place your bets and a chicken is placed on a numbered board. The first number the chicken … goes on, is the winner.

Test your luck with the chickens Saturday during Tonto Basin’s second annual Wild West Day at Cactus Flats Bar, just off Highway 188 at milepost 260.

The all day fund-raising event includes concerts, food, raffles, a four-wheel poker ride, games and a whole lot of fun. All you need is a horse, quad, western wear and willingness to have fun.

The event is one of the biggest to hit the small community all year.

The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast from the Kiwanis club at the bar. At 9 a.m., take a quad, four-wheel or horse poker ride from Cactus Flats Bar. The cost is $25 per rider.

At 1 p.m., Tonto Basin Marketplace will host a barbecue cookout at the bar.

To cap off the day, starting at 7 p.m., Crossfire, Junction 87, Dusty Roads and Section 8 will take the stage.

Also on tap is the chicken drop, greasy pig contest, Hashknife Pony Express riders, historic first ladies and historians of Tonto Basin.

The Tonto Basin Chamber of Commerce and Cactus Flats Bar are sponsoring the event to benefit the Tonto Recovery Committee, Kiwanis Community Center and Gila County Sheriff’s Office.

“Bring your horse, quad or yourself to Cactus Flats and have fun at the friendliest bar in town,” event organizers said.

“Wear your best attire from the Old Wild West days.”
