The Payson Rimstones Rock Club provides college scholarships annually to students from northern Gila County for high school and college students that are majoring in physical and earth sciences, biological sciences (including nursing and forestry) and physical geography.
This year the scholarships have been increased up to $3,000 per school year. Students can re-apply yearly if they maintain a B average in college. The deadline for the scholarship application is May 27.
The scholarships are funded by the Rimstones’ Education Funds which are generated from our yearly gem and mineral show. The show, which will be Nov. 19-20, has educational displays and 17 vendors with jewelry, minerals, fossils, gems, books and lapidary supplies for purchase.
Anyone with questions pertaining to the scholarship program or types of majors that may qualify for the scholarship, or the annual mineral and gem show should contact Barry Jones at 476-3513 or e-mail the club at email@example.com.
The club meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Payson Public Library, except during the summer when it meets at alternate sites from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The club has monthly field trips and monthly guest speakers.
Other education efforts include a class room elementary education program and providing the local libraries with donations to purchase earth science and geological science books.
