The Payson High School Boys and Girls Soccer program will have an Italian Dinner Benefit from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 13 at Payson Elementary School. Optimist Fishing Festival

The 5th Annual Optimist Fishing Festival is this weekend, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, April 9 at Green Valley Park.

Come out for some great fishing in freshly stocked lakes, fun, food, prizes and more.

Registration and fishing licenses are not required. Poles and bait will be available, along with fishing clinics by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and Trout Unlimited members.

Brush drop-off sites

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting: Saturday, April 9 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson; Sunday, April 10 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings, and other vegetative materials only.  Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned.  No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted.

RPAP brush pits are intended for the use of private citizens who are working to clear their properties for wildfire risk reduction and to create defensible space around their homes.  They are not intended for commercial use, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.

Gila Community College is offering the following real estate license renewal courses at the Payson campus:

• Business Techniques for Real Estate I, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 9  

• Business Techniques for Real Estate II, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 9  

• Agency, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 16

• Disclosure, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 16

• Contract Law, 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 23

• Beneficiary Deeds, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 23

• Broker Audit and Commission Rules, 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, April 28

• Fair Housing, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, April 28

The cost is $20 per class in advance, or $25 per class on the day of instruction.

These courses satisfy the Arizona Department of Real Estate’s requirements for continuing education hours for all sales and broker licenses.

Spring Fashion Show

The American Legion Auxiliary Thrift Shop will be hosting a Spring Fashion Show starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9. There will be a soup and salad luncheon followed by a fashion show, silent auction and Easter Bonnet auction. It will be held in the Legion dining hall and is open to the public.

All proceeds will benefit the Auxiliary Scholarship Program, which benefits local students.

Greg Day Day

Greg Day, long time owner and operator of Macky’s with his wife Cari, has been diagnosed with a serious illness and is facing major surgery and catastrophic medical costs. A number of fund-raising events are planned in the next few days to help the family with their medical expenses.

On Saturday, April 9, on the patio at Macky’s Grill, there will be music by John and Lu Carpino from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Junction 87 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Anything Goes from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Dr. Jass and the Heartbeats from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and then Steve Stevens with Karaoke from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be three performances by Carpino this weekend.

John Carpino will perform solo Friday, April 8 evening at Cardo’s; at noon, Saturday, April 9, John and Lu Carpino will be at Macky’s for the Greg Day benefit; and that night, Saturday, April 9, John Carpino and the Hot Cappuccinos will be at the Buffalo Bar and Grill. Shop Hop and Swap Meet

The Pine/Strawberry Business Community has several events coming up.

Saturday, April 9 kicks off the 2nd Saturday Shop Hop. This year the group has rented the ramada area at the Pine Community Center every second Saturday for a Swap Meet (except June). People can bring their merchandise and sell it for a nominal fee of $5.

At the end of April, look for their Annual May Day Gardening Celebration.

PHS presents ‘Hello Dolly’

The Payson High School Musical Theatre Club will present “Hello Dolly,” a classic comedy with music, dancing, matchmaking, and romantic connivance at the PHS Auditorium at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 9.

Prices at the door are: adults, $8; students, $6; seniors, $7.

Advance tickets are available at MoJoe’s Café, the Payson Public Library and Oasis Bookstore at $2 off the at-the-door prices.

April 10 Sunday

Concert in search of audience

The 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10 jazz concert with the Ken Taylor Quartet is in need of an audience. The head count estimate is very low; so all those who enjoy hearing live music being played very well are encouraged to attend this performance. As an incentive, a donation will be optional.

Sunday’s performance will be “songs of spring” – Broadway tunes by American composers that have become very popular, such as “It Might As Well Be Spring” done in a tasty, swinging jazz style.

Trumpeter Ken Taylor will perform with pianist Dave Ihlenfeld; bassist Steve Douglas; and drummer Gerry Reynolds at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 10 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main, Payson.

Fossil Creek management plan available for review

Coconino and Tonto National Forest officials have released a draft of proposed action for managing Fossil Creek and it is now available for public review and comments. An alternate proposal developed by some stakeholders is also available for comment.

There will be opportunity to learn more about the proposal and offer feedback during the open house, scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 11 at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road, Payson
