The Rim Country Middle School baseball team is off to a break-even start in the 2011 season defeating Beaver Creek 20-2, but losing 6-5 to Cottonwood.
The team, however, might have been 2-0 had it not been for some mistakes incurred in the loss to Cottonwood.
Coach Gary Chitwood says of the loss, at the end of the third inning Payson had a 5-0 lead and since this was the opener, the coaches thought the lead was good enough to put in the reserves.
“Due to some unfortunate incidents and errors, Cottonwood roared back to a win.”
In the loss, Layne Chitwood started on the hill pitching three innings and striking out four.
He left with the 5-0 lead and was replaced by seventh-grader Taron Sarnowski, a former four-time Little League All Star hurler.
The move appears to have backfired as Cottonwood rallied to take the win.
On March 31, the baseball team traveled to Beaver Creek, Gary Chitwood said, “determined to get a win.”
Layne Chitwood received the starting pitching nod and hurled five innings leaving with a 10-1 cushion.
“Sarnowski was called in to finish, which he did,” Gary Chitwood said.
Offensively, coaches say Layne Chitwood was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a single.
Ruben Estrada and Ryan Wacker were 2-for-3 and Sarnwoski had two hits in four plate appearances.
Austin Gibson and David Wells had one hit each.
The coaches, which include Heath Wacker, Gary Fishel and Gary Chitwood say they, “are pleased because most of the (players) are seventh-graders, but have a lot of heart and determination.”
