Rev The Engine, Get In Gear – Cannonball Is Here

The Cannonball Phoenix Spree is coming to Payson April 16 and bringing fun, excitement and entertainment along with it.

You may be asking yourself, is this Cannonball related to the movie starring Burt Reynolds in the ’80s? Yes, but this Cannonball is an epic game rally, which consists of a four-part competition where participants enjoy an interactive journey with their cars.

The Cannonball Phoenix Spree officially kicks off Friday night at the Fort McDowell Radisson where it is open to spectators and participants alike. Spectators can come and check out the cars which include muscle, exotic, junker, daily drivers and specialty cars like the Batmobile, ECTO, Knight Rider KITT car, Roscoe P Coltrane’s Dukes of Hazzard Sheriff’s car with the General Lee and more.

All money given for raffle tickets goes directly to Operation Homefront, which supports our troops and the families they leave behind.

Last year, the rally hit Payson shops where Cannonballers searched for the hidden Cannonball Cash and looked for clues to answer trivia questions.

Once again, the Wagon Wheel territory shops step it up to transform the town into Cannonball turf. Western Village hosts as the rally’s mandatory checkpoint. The cars should start rolling into Payson around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The first stop will be the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Other stops in Payson will be at the Rim Country Museum in Green Valley Park, Payson Florist & Gifts in the Swiss Village and Cardo’s Pizza in the Ponderosa Village (west of Safeway).

Payson residents are encouraged to come out to view the cast of characters and cars competing.

Why the Cannonball? Founder and organizer Stephanie Finnegan said, “I really wanted to put together a fun-spirited event where all participants and cars would be invited, a spoof on the old Cannonball Run movies.”
