A Cordes Lakes motorcyclist died and another motorcyclists was injured in a head-on collision with a truck on Highway 87, north of Payson Sunday.
Douglas V. King, 58, died on scene around 1 p.m. after his motorcycle crossed into the northbound lanes of Highway 87, striking a pickup truck head-on, said Capt. Stephen M. Harrison with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
King was riding in front of another motorcyclist in the southbound lane of the highway near milepost 273, three miles north of Strawberry, when the outside motorcycle drifted left. When this happened, King, who was closest to the centerline, was forced to cross into northbound traffic, striking the truck, Harrison said.
However, according to motorcyclists who were riding behind, King and the other motorcyclist were not riding parallel. King was out front when he came into a steep curve. For some reason, he lost control of the bike and the motorcycle crossed the centerline, striking the truck.
Pieces of King's motorcycle flew off and knocked the motorcyclist behind him off. This rider suffered a broken ankle.
Other motorcyclists coming down the road swerved to miss the wreck.
One witness said the scene looked like a battlefield.
King was not wearing a helmet.
