What a whirlwind weekend I had this past weekend. Our grandson, Marine private Brian Snyder is leaving for Afghanistan on May 7.
Our son Bill and his wife Shari had a going away party for all the family and Brian’s friends in Yuma this past Saturday night. I picked up our youngest daughter, Carolyn Peterson from Sky Harbor Friday afternoon, and we drove to Yuma. It was a hectic and hurried trip, but all of our children were at the same place at the same time, which hasn’t happened in years! There was a lot of picture taking and a lot of hugs, and tears, not only because we were all together, but because Brian was going to be in harm’s way. There were many family members on both sides of the family, plus friends so the Snyder household was packed! So much fun! So much laughter! I would not have missed it for anything!
Happenings in the Village
A meeting of the Tonto Village Domestic Water Improvement District was held on April 17 at the Hellsgate Tonto Village Fire Station. The water board approved the budget for the coming year with no new taxes. The budget will be posted at the fire station and on both mailboxes in the Village, and will also be posted in the Payson Roundup for the next three weeks. There will be a meeting on June 7 to OK the budget that will be sent to the Gila County assessor’s office.
The water board is inviting anyone who is interested in joining the board to call Linda Stailey at 928-478-4641.
Even though it is Holy Week this week, activities are still in full swing. Art classes at the Tonto Village Chapel on Tuesdays at 1:30, Dominoes at the fire station at 1 p.m., Bible study again at the chapel at 11 a.m., featuring the numbers in the scriptures and what the numbers mean. The art class and the Bible study class will resume next week.
There is nine-ball competition at the Double D Restaurant on Tuesday evenings featuring the gals from Christopher Creek and the Village, and then it’s the men’s turn on Thursday evenings. There is no excuse for anyone to be bored, there is enough variety for everyone.
If none of these activities interest you, there is also hiking in the forest, quad riding and just plain walking the Village.
Have fun whatever you decide to do.
Hellsgate Fire Department and Fireflies
The Hellsgate brush crew has suspended clearing of brush and debris from Ellison Creek Summer Homes because of the changing weather conditions. The wind has been the major factor. There also has not been any burn permits issued until further notice because of the wind.
The Fireflies will be holding their next meeting at 1 p.m., Monday, May 2 at the fire station in Tonto Village. The meeting will be a short one to set up the committees for the Memorial Weekend breakfast and to organize supplies needed for each committee.
Roxanne Martin of Tonto Village II will add another candle to her birthday cake on April 19, and she will share her birthday with Angela Meeker Glass, the daughter of Rick and Theresa Meeker of Tonto Village II and Scottsdale. Pleasant thoughts are sent your way with a wish for a happy birthday.
Double D pool results
This past Tuesday evening, Ethel Cain shot for first place for the second week in a row. That’s great shooting, Ethel, congratulations! Second place was Christopher Creek resident, Judy Tolle. Third place was Tonto Village III resident, Kara Shaw.
The men took over the pool tables on Thursday evening with Cliff Landrum shooting for the top spot. Cliff has not played for a while, but he must have been practicing to win first place! Ron Desrochers and Tim Reed took second and third places. Congratulations to all the winners.
Since this week is Holy Week for many of my readers, I want to wish them Happy Easter and Happy Passover. At this joyous time of year, keep friends and family close at hand and enjoy every minute of this holy season.
