Fireflies Fund-Raiser A Big Success

Monday afternoon, Tonto Village was blessed with a torrent of rain complete with sound effects. The thunder was not quite as loud as last week. Still, our doggie barked every time she heard the clap of thunder. All in all, the rainfall amount, according to unofficial sources, was 1.5 inches.

The creek running through Bear Flat came up extremely fast and almost stranded a resident coming back from Payson. Thankfully, as fast as it rose, it receded back down to not quite to its normal level but enough to allow the Bear Flat residents to pass safely to their homes.

The rain is a welcome sight no matter how little we get. Every drop is appreciated.

Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary

The Fireflies had a successful day at Bashas’ market on Saturday selling raffle tickets and T-shirts and caps. They really look cool with the Hellsgate logo on them. The raffle tickets were for the chainsaw, the $300 food card from Bashas’ and the $200 Giant gas card. The drawing will be at the Labor Day celebration and BBQ on Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Tonto Village Fire Station. The Fireflies gives a special thank-you to Bashas’ for their generous contribution to community service. The day was so successful that the chairperson for the drawings, Susan Warwick, has scheduled another day on Aug. 18 at the Safeway market. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may be lucky enough to win one of the raffle items. The tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The winner need not be present to win. But then you would be missing out on a fantastic pulled-pork sandwich, fresh corn on the cob, beans and coleslaw and a drink all for $7. How about a good selection of homemade canned items such as blackberry jam, or a fresh fruit pie? Does fresh cinnamon buns sound better to you? Check out the selection on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The next Fireflies meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 8 starting at 9:30 at the Tonto Village Fire Station. The fire station is easy to find, just follow Johnson Boulevard to Mathews Lane on the right. It’s the bright, red building — can’t miss it!

Hellsgate Fire Department

The Star Valley fire station will be hosting a refresher EMT class on Aug. 22. There are still a few openings available. The class will be held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will run through December. Applications can be picked up at fire station #21 in Star Valley from administrative assistant Karen Carlen. The station phone number is 474-3835.

Birthdays

The month of August is prolific for birthdays in Tonto Village and I probably do not even have everyone’s. Former pastor of the Tonto Village Chapel, Charles Wilcox starts the month off on Aug. 2. “Pastor Charlie,” as he is known to the villagers, moved on to other pursuits a few years ago, but he still is on the pulpit occasionally at the Star Valley Baptist Church. Happy birthday to you, Pastor Charlie!

On Aug. 4, Charlie Conover, a Hellsgate fire board member and former firefighter himself, will add another candle to his birthday cake.

On Aug. 8, Mary Kindler of Bear Flat, will be a young 84 years old! Mary lets no moss grow under her feet, she is so active! Mary is a member of the Hellsgate Fireflies, a Domino Diva and she makes the best lemon meringue pie you ever tasted! Mary is also very active in the homeowner’s association of Bear Flat and opens up her home to their functions.

May love, laughter and contentment decorate your day and fill your year with happiness. Happy birthday to all of you.
