The next week or so will be extremely busy for the Snyder family. Three of our five children will be here to visit and will be enjoying the cooler weather here since they live in Yuma. We will also be celebrating a birthday, with all the trimmings, cake, ice cream, etc. Naturally seeing the sights of Payson will be on the agenda.

Fireflies and Bashas’

One of the events that the Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary will be attending is the Bashas’ Festival on Saturday, Aug. 20. The Fireflies Auxiliary will be manning a booth to sell raffle tickets, T-shirts and caps. One of the raffle items is a Bashas’ gift card for food in the amount of $300. The other big item is a $200 gift card from Giant gas station. The third item is the Husqvarna 20-inch chain saw. Come by and check it out at the Fireflies booth.

The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bashas’ shopping center. Bashas’ will be manning booths selling all types of food, and there will be booths of craft items and a bit of everything.

The Fireflies will be on the Rockin’ Ron Show on KMOG on Monday afternoon , Aug. 22 about 2 p.m. The radio station and Ron Gibson has been very supportive of the fund-raisers and the Fireflies appreciates his support.

The barbecue dinner has become a tradition to the Village going back to the 1980s and has been know for its excellent food. The corn on the cob, for instance, comes from Snowflake, Arizona, and it is called “peaches and cream.” It is so sweet and really quite delicious.

The Fireflies will be holding the September business meeting at 9:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 12. In Tonto Village at the fire station meeting room. Everyone is invited to attend since all the meetings are open to the public.

As you can see, the Fireflies are a very busy group. If you would like to be a part of all the activities and help support your firefighters, come to the next meeting on Sept. 12. The Fireflies has honorary members also, and you need not be in the Hellsgate area.

Brush pickup

Don’t forget that there will be a community brush pickup after Sept. 3 in Tonto Village. You can drop off brush in the empty lot across from the fire station. No garbage and no building materials, please! The brush crew will be picking up the brush sometime in September.

Hellsgate Fire Board

At the August Hellsgate Fire Board meeting on Aug. 11, at the Star Valley station, the fire board awarded a certificate of service with the fire department to Matt Highstreet who has been with the department for nine years and to John Ceja for four years of service. Bill McCave, Dale Hayes and Thorry Smith have completed their one year of probation. Congratulations to these firefighters and welcome to the Hellsgate Fire Department.

Congratulations to Hellsgate Fire Chief Gary Hatch for being elected president of the Arizona Fire Chief’s Association recently.

Double D doings

There was only one competition this past week. The gals from the Double D team traveled to the “new” Landmark in Christopher Creek for their weekly competition. The winner was Judy Tolle of Christopher Creek shooting for first place followed by Sharon Marksbury and Ethel Cain from Tonto Village.

The Village received word of the passing of Darrin Hopely of Ellison Creek Estates. Darrin was a former firefighter with the Tonto Village Fire Department Sympathies to Darrin’s family. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Mazatzal Casino.
