Bad Use Of Quads Dangerous For Kids

This past Sunday afternoon, there were many kids driving up and down the “island” on a quad, raising a lot of noise and dust.

But that was not the worst part of it. At one point, one of the neighbors saw six kids on one quad and another one hanging on the back riding a skateboard. This is so dangerous besides causing discomfort for the neighbors with the noise and the dust. These same kids were spotted on the water bladder that is situated in the island for emergencies. There are metal hoses attached to the bladder and a kid could really get hurt if they fell on those hoses. The bladder is not a play toy and should not be considered as one.

Parents, please inform your children of the dangers of playing on the water bladder and of course, they need to be monitored when driving or riding on those quads. The Village does not need any unfortunate accidents that could have been avoided.

29 days left in 2011

As of today, there are 29 days left for 2011. Where did the year go? Is it really true that the years go by faster as you age? It sure seems that way.

The most wonderful news for the Snyder family is that our grandson Brian Snyder, USMC, will be returning from Afghanistan this month and will be home in Yuma for Christmas.

We are planning for Brian, our son Bill, his wife Shari, our granddaughter Gatlyn and grandson Christian will be bringing in the new year with us here in Tonto Village. What a wonderful way to start a new year and new beginning.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The meetings must go on even though December is considered the height of the holiday season. Normal business must go on.

The Hellsgate Fire Board will be holding its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at the Star Valley fire station board room. The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Fire board member Larry Corey will be recognized for three years of service to the fire board. Thank you Larry for your interest and dedication to the Hellsgate Fire Department.

There will be pre-blood pressure checks given by the Hellsgate firefighters on the first Saturday of each month beginning on Dec. 3.

The times are 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Lamplighter community room in Star Valley. As a person gets a bit older, it is a good thing to keep on top of your blood pressure to prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Get well wishes and a speedy recovery to John Wisner on his recent surgery. Hurry up and get back to work, John!

Please note the closing of the administrative office in Star Valley at station #21 on these dates: Dec. 25 and 26, Jan. 1 and 2 and Jan. 16.

Christmas party

The Domino Divas and the Hellsgate Fireflies will be holding their Christmas party on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at station #22 in Tonto Village. All Fireflies are cordially invited to join the Divas for a fun afternoon. The fun starts at 1 p.m. and the food will be served shortly thereafter.

The meat (pork roast) is provided and this year, our chief cook, Linda Stailey, will be doing the roasting. Each guest is asked to bring a side dish and a gift to exchange. Hopefully there may be time enough for a game or two of dominoes.

Food drive continues

The Hellsgate food drive is continuing through December and your contribution is greatly appreciated.

A box has been set up at station #21 in Star Valley and station #22 in Tonto Village. Please make someone happy with food on their table for Christmas.

The food bank is in dire straits this year with so many of the residents in Payson and the surrounding area in need of assistance.

There is only one birthday this week. Casey Stluka of Tonto Village II celebrates her big day on Nov. 29. Have a great day, Casey.

Another reminder to everyone to submit their recipes for the Fireflies upcoming cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook.”

Please e-mail your recipes to: pennykaye@,, or janet_

ou can also mail the recipes to Hellsgate Fire Department, 80 S. Walters Lane, Star Valley, AZ 85541. Just earmark the envelope with “recipes.”

Time is running out so the recipes are needed ASAP.

This past Tuesday evening the Double D gals held their weekly nine-ball competition. Kara Shaw, Ethel Cain and Tammy, Ethel’s daughter, were the three top winners. Congratulations to all of you.
