Rim Country Recycling Opportunities Require Research; Most Are For Free

Those of you planning on a new computer for yourself or someone else this holiday season can recycle old computer equipment for free thanks to Gila County.

The Buckhead Mesa Landfill will take your old computer, computer monitor, printer, copier and even old flat screen televisions and recycle them. And it won’t cost you anything.

On occasion, the Gila County Solid Waste Department holds special recycling events, but does not have any planned until the weather warms, according to director Sharon Radanovich.

The landfill is north on Highway 87 between Payson and Pine; hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

There are recycling bins for paper products throughout Payson to use free of charge. Paper products that may be recycled include: newspapers and magazines, office paper and junk mail, brown paper bags, paperboard (cartons), paper cardboard such as used in dairy and juice containers, phone books and cardboard — it is requested that cardboard be cut down into 2-feet-by-2-feet squares.

Aluminum cans can be recycled through the Humane Society of Central Arizona, which has large trash cans, painted with Dalmatian spots, throughout the community.

Tin or steel cans are accepted at the Waste Management transfer station on Airport Road and Chenault Parkway. Plastic bottles and containers can also be recycled at this site. However, only plastics marked as No. 1 through No. 7 will be accepted. The number can be found on the bottom of these containers, generally in a triangle. There are bins for aluminum cans, paper and cardboard products here as well.

Every weekend, weather permitting, yard/ brush/tree clippings can be “recycled” at the Firewise Rim Country brush pits, free of charge. Watch for announcements on page 3A.
