Only one brush pit open

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing only the free Blattner Pit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson. The Pine Pit will be closed due to snowy and muddy conditions from the recent storms.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned. No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted.

RPAP brush pits are intended for the use of private citizens who are working to clear their properties for wildfire risk reduction and to create defensible space around their homes. They are not intended for commercial use.

Amnesty International Write-A-Thon is Saturday

The Payson Amnesty International chapter will take part in the Amnesty International Global Write-A-Thon from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Rim Country Literacy Building, 1003 S. Beeline Highway (behind the Knotty Pine Café). The goal is to write 500 letters, with help from members of the congregations of the Church of the Nazarene, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mount Cross Lutheran Church and Payson United Methodist Church.

The chapter needs $500 for the 500 letters it plans to write to cover postage and supplies. In addition to making a donation, those interested can participate in the project by stopping by and just signing their name on form letters; taking the time to sit down and hand write letters; or become a member.

The Knotty Pine is offering a free beverage with any meal for those who write a letter for the project.

See a movie, help literacy

Sawmill Theatres and the Rim Country Literacy Program are hosting a special showing of the children’s movie, “Happy Feet 2” at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 10 at Sawmill Theatres, 201 W. Main St. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $3 per person.

All proceeds from the ticket sales will be used to help run the Rim Country Literacy Program’s free services.

Mount Cross Lutheran Chancel Choir program

The Chancel Choir of Mount Cross Lutheran Church will present Schubert’s “Mass in G Major” at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.

Soloists with the Chancel Choir will be Eloise Jones, soprano; Barbara Overfield, soprano; Lee Kennedy, soprano; Patricia Patterson-King, soprano; Linda Wiebe, alto; Douglas Overfield, baritone; Ronald Nelson, bass.

The choir will be accompanied by Caroline Yost, violin 1; Leonard Galster, violin 2; Sydney Springstead, viola; Evelyn Dimbat, cello.

Mount Cross Lutheran Church is at 600 E. Highway 260, just east of Safeway.

Spirit of Christmas

Join the Payson Christian Ministerial Fellowship in its celebration of the holiday at its annual presentation of the Spirit of Christmas program.

Mixing contemporary Christmas music and skits, along with the traditional story of the birth of Jesus woven with a play about a challenging family scenario, the program is presented by members of numerous area churches.

No admission will be charged, but audience members are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Rim Country’s food banks.

The program will be at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Payson High School Auditorium.

Beyond Limits Disability Ministry

Beyond Limits, an interdenominational Christian group for adults with developmental disabilities, will attend the Spirit of Christmas performance at Payson High School Auditorium Sunday, Dec. 11. Members will meet in the lobby at 1:30 p.m.

No regular monthly dinner meeting will be held in December. The First Church of the Nazarene at 200 E. Tyler Parkway will host the Jan. 10 meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Jazz concert

Jazz guitarist and vocalist Pete Pancrazi returns to the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11 for his annual “Have a Jazzy Christmas” performance.

Joining him will be Nick Manson on piano, Vic Kottner on bass, and Gerry Reynolds on drums.

A donation of $5 or more is encouraged to support the program, which includes refreshments.

PEC Parent Resource Night

Payson Education Center, an accredited alternative high school, would like to invite the public to attend “Parent Resource Night” on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.  

The topic for this hour-long presentation is “Dealing With Life Stressors.” Andrea Mascio, LAMFT, will be the guest speaker.  Light refreshments will be served.

Gingerbread house decorating event is Dec. 13

The congregation of Crossroads Foursquare Church, 114 E. Cedar Lane, invites everyone to the 6th Annual Gingerbread House Decoration Party at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13.
