With two Arizona region Western Outdoor News (WON) bass fishing tournaments in the record books, four Rim Country anglers remain in contention to advance to the bass team championships to be held in the spring at the conclusion of the inaugural seven-tournament season.
Currently the Payson team of Keith Hunsinger and Robert O’Donnell are sitting third in the WON standings with 232 points, just four less than standing leaders Ken Howden and Gary Understiller.
The Payson pair has been able to cling to the third place slot despite not having weighed in a lunker during the two tournaments, both of which were held at Roosevelt Lake.
The largest bass the two have caught tipped the scales at just 2.03 pounds.
Conversely the second place team of John Sneed and Jerry Kirkpatrick has caught an 8.42-pound largemouth.
Brad Cook, of Payson, is teaming with Tonto Basin part-time resident Matt Shura to sit ninth in the standings with 116 points.
Also, Payson fishermen Bruce Johnson is ranked 13th with 111 points.
With a pair of tournaments in the rearview mirror, WON anglers are steering toward a third fray at Roosevelt and others at Lake Pleasant, Apache Lake and two at Bartlett Lake.
The final tournament at Roosevelt will be Feb. 25, 2012.
In the Arizona region, WON teams fish for cash and prizes with a goal of qualifying for the team finals.
Entrants must be 16 years of age, but bass anglers of all skills are invited to participate.
