Truck Pulled Out Of Flooded Tonto Creek

A pickup truck had to be towed out of Tonto Creek Wednesday after being inadvertently driven into a hole, flooding the cab with water — and it all happened in the fire chief’s rearview mirror.

Tonto Basin Chief Steve Holt said he was heading east across the swollen creek just before noon to deliver prescriptions to a resident.

As he made his way across the Store Crossing, he passed a pickup heading west and waved hello to the driver.

As the man passed, his truck fell into a large hole in the creek bottom, trapping the vehicle and flooding it with eight inches of water, Holt said.

“I saw him get stuck in my rearview mirror.”

Although the creek is flowing higher than normal, there were no barricades out.

A tow truck pulled the vehicle out and the driver was not cited.
