The Payson High School basketball teams will wrap up 2011 play in two prestigious holiday vacation tournaments. The boys team, coached by Joe Sanchez, travels Dec. 27 to 29 to Bradshaw Mountain High School to compete in the 18-team Alvarez Tire Classic.

The girls spring into action the following day, Dec. 28, at the Payson Holiday Hoops Tournament to be held in Wilson Dome and Julia Randall Elementary School gym.

The fray has drawn 16 teams from around Arizona and will feature a full slate of games on opening day before wrapping up on the following afternoon with consolation and championship games.

During the course of the boys tournament, the team could play as many as four games.

The girls could play three or four games depending on how well they fare.

Following the two tournaments, the teams’ 2012 action will have them playing mostly Division III, Section III opponents.

The results of those games will be used to seed the teams into the sectional tournament when it is played Feb. 8 to 11 in Surprise.

A good showing there will propel the teams in the Division III or “state tournament” to be decided Feb. 14 to 25.
