Horns Visit Falcons; Lady Horns Host Show Low

Following a Feb. 2 conference call among 3A East athletic directors, Payson High Athletic Director Rob Varner announced that for the first round of the region tournament the Lady Longhorns will host the Show Low Cougars and the PHS boys will travel to Whiteriver Alchesay.

After making the announcement, Varner added a slight disclaimer, saying the first round matchups could change because some teams have not reported all their regular season scores. When they are eventually turned in to the Arizona Interscholastic Association and compiled, the results could change the power point rankings and tournament seedings.

“I don’t think it’s going to change, but there is always that possibility,” said Varner.

No matter who plays in the opening round, both games will tip off at 7 p.m.

If the games remain as Varner announced, the Lady Horns open as the East’s fourth seed and Show Low is No. 5.

The boys visit Whiteriver as a fifth seed pitted against No. 4 Alchesay.

A check of the power point rankings late this week shows the Lady Longhorns, with their 4-14 regular season record, ranked 20th with 49.8239 points.

Show Low, at 3-13 has 46.5604 points.

The boys basketball team is ranked 14th with a 6-12 record and 61.3228 power points.

San Tan Foothills, ranked 15th, has a decent 10-7 record, but only 60.8027 power points.

In East Region final standings for boys teams, the Horns are fifth in the six-team region with a 3-7 East record.

The Lady Horns have a 2-8 East Region mark and are tied for fourth with Show Low.

However, PHS has more power points than the Lady Cougars and will host the game rather than travel.

The winners of the two opening round games visit Lakeside on Feb. 11 for quarterfinal tournament games.

Admission for all region tournament games is $8 for adults and $6 for students.

No passes are accepted.
