Jaymi Carlen and Molly Davis were among the players honored last evening, Feb. 24, during the Lady Longhorn basketball team’s season-ending awards banquet.
Both were acknowledged for being named “honorable mention” on the 3A East All-Region team that was chosen in a voting of coaches.
Both Carlen and Davis played huge roles on last season’s team that managed to advance to the second round of the region tournament before coming up just short of earning a state berth.
Coach Kelly Krieg, in her second year at the helm of the program, lauds Davis as a player “who has really done a tremendous job of being our leader.”
The coach praises Carlen for, “continuing to be one of the better guards on the floor each and every night.”
Davis turned in one of her finer games on Feb. 9 in a 46-34 East tournament victory over Show Low. In the win, she scored nine points, had three steals, dished out an assist and played commendable defense.
In the same game, Carlen also shined with an all-around impressive floor game that included nine points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists.
Carlen’s finest game might have been during a 44-36 loss to Blue Ridge in which the Yellow Jackets employed a gimmick defense to slow Carlen’s teammate — Chioya Hill.
With Hill being held in check, Carlen stepped up to score a season- and team-high 19 points. She also corralled four rebounds and had two steals.
Davis chipped in with what Krieg called a “nice game” contributing 12 points, two rebounds and a steal.
Carlen also had a fine offensive showing with 15 points on Jan. 4 in a 52-36 loss to Round Valley. Davis tallied seven points.
The good news for PHS faithful is that two honorees will both return next season to form the nucleus of the Lady Longhorn team.
Krieg has said she also expects the duo to play leadership roles in the offseason program which she is calling the key to future success.
