Fire treatments are planned to eliminate approximately 100 acres of vegetative debris piles in the Geronimo Estates area from Tuesday, Jan. 11 through Friday, Jan. 14. To minimize the impact of smoke, Payson Ranger District fire personnel will end ignitions each day by 3 p.m.
Residents and visitors to the area can expect to see and smell moderate amounts of smoke each day of the prescribed fire operation. During the operation, smoke will move up Webber Creek and over the Mogollon Rim. Diurnal airflow in the evening hours will move smoke down the East Verde River.
When fire operations begin, signs will be posted along roads that are likely to be affected by smoke. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through these areas.
Fire treatments are always dependent upon weather conditions, fuel moisture content, relative humidity, wind speed and direction.
For information about prescribed fire and mechanical fuels reduction operations, please call the Payson Ranger District at (928) 474-7900. Residents can also stay updated on forest prescribed fires at www.fs.usda.gov/Tonto.
