Here’S Hoping It Rains Sooner Rather Than Later

It’s hard to believe that today is July 1. The summer is just flying by. I hope that we will soon be in the rainy season, and the high heat tempered a bit.

One of my readers suggested that the rain may be here in about three weeks, since the clouds just started forming. I hope that it is sooner.

The big 4th of July holiday is right around the corner when the barbecue grill gets a workout. What is your favorite? Mine is grilled veggies and burnt hot dogs!

I hope that all my readers have a wonderful 4th of July holiday with family and friends, but with two warnings: no fireworks except to watch them at Green Valley Park and no campfires. Our forest is so very precious to all of us and we all have an obligation to keep the forest green.

This past weekend, Tonto Village was treated to an unusual sight when the Arizona Draft Horse and Mule Association had their club outing and came through Tonto Village, stopping at the Double D Café for lunch.

The group started at the La Cienaga Ranch on the Control Road. There were Villagers out taking pictures as they passed. It’s not every day a person gets to see draft horses (they sure are huge!) and old-time buggies coming down Johnson Boulevard. The association is a statewide organization. The officers are Troy Haviland, president; Jay Parkison, vice president; and Audra Daugherty, secretary. If you are interested in this group, contact Audra at (928) 478-4458.

Hellsgate Fire Department

Thankfully, all of the firefighters from Hellsgate are now home, safe and sound after battling a very bad fire season. We appreciate all their hard work in fighting the very stubborn forest fires. Job well done, Hellsgate firefighters! We are proud of each and every one of you!

The Fireflies Auxiliary will hold their July meeting on July 11 at 9:30 a.m. at station #22 in Tonto Village. Karen Carlen, the administrative assistant at station #21 will be the featured speaker.

The Hellsgate Fire Board will be meeting on Wednesday, July 13 starting at 5:30 p.m. at station #21 in Star Valley.

President Richard Pinkerton will be awarding certificates to Jeffrey Yunkens for five years of service, Matt Highstreet for nine years of service and Rick Heron for 16 years of service. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your dedication to the Hellsgate Fire Department.

As of July 1, the new office hours of the administration office in Star Valley will be Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office will be closed on July 4th for the holiday.

EMT basic classes will begin on Aug. 22. Please sign up at the admin office with Karen.

Birthdays, anniversaries

Starting off in the month of July is Marie Coley of Tonto Village II. Marie will celebrate her birthday on July 3 along with Barb Wheeler of Christopher Creek.

On July 6, Rick and Theresa Meeker will celebrate 38 years of marriage. Rick and Theresa divide their time between the Village and Scottsdale. Happy anniversary to you both. On July 7, both Kay King and Ethel Cain of Tonto Village III will add another candle to their birthday cakes. Roger Boyington will also join in with his birthday on the same day. Another year, another birthday, another year of memories. Celebrate your day to the fullest.

Double D doings

There will be special entertainment on July 3 at the Double D. The ever-popular Lynda St. John will be playing her special brand of music with her trusty guitar for everyone’s enjoyment. The music starts at noon and she will entertain you until 3 p.m.

The pool results for Tuesday evening’s nine-ball competition are Nanci Olson, Ethel Cain and Patti Boeschling.

The mixed competition on Thursday evening winners were John Watson, Ethel Cain and Betty Koutz. Congratulations to all the winners.
