A head-on collision north of Payson Monday left two people dead.

The deaths were part of four accident-related fatalities the Arizona Department of Public Safety investigated over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

On Monday, Brenda Lea Gemas, 26, of Mesa, and Bue Rye Oh, 77, of Phelan, Calif. died in a head-on collision 43 miles north of Payson on Highway 87.

The accident happened just after noon when the Toyota SUV Gemas was riding in, driven by Daniel Odes Prock, 27, of Mesa, went off the highway.

“As Prock went off the right side of the road, he overcorrected into the northbound lanes, head-on into a four-door Suzuki SUV,” said Bart Graves, a DPS spokesperson.

A medical examiner pronounced Gemas deceased at the scene along with Oh, the Suzuki’s passenger.

Paramedics took Prock to a Flagstaff hospital for head trauma.

Everyone, including the Suzuki’s driver, Sang Din Park, 82, of Phelan, Calif., was wearing seat belts, Graves said.
