The Tonto Basin Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service responded to several forest fires over the weekend, with all contained by Monday afternoon.
Lightning-caused all three fires, with the Fish Fire reported at 2 p.m. Saturday off Old Apache Trail, the Market Fire at 5:53 p.m. Sunday near Punkin Center and Vineyard Fire at 5:45 p.m. near Roosevelt Lake.
The Fish Fire moved quickly through dry terrain, jumping over state Hwy. 88 and into the rugged Fish Creek Canyon.
More than 70 firefighters, including a Payson Hotshot crew, responded, containing the fire to 404 acres by Monday, said David Albo, Tonto National Forest public information officer.
Albo said the cliffy terrain made fighting the fire difficult.
On Sunday, the Tonto Basin Fire Department had back-to-back calls with a fire behind a market in Tonto Basin and another fire near Roosevelt Lake, said Steve Hold, Tonto Basin Fire chief. Both were quickly contained to half an acre.
