Phil Wagner and Ed Kuhns were the big winners at the Payson Men’s Golf Association hosted “ABCD Team Low Net Tournament” played June 29 at Payson Golf Course.
The pair formed one-half of the winning foursome that posted a 179 in the best ball format.
Also on the team were Popeye Clay and Russ Morris.
In addition to Wagner and Kuhns winning prize money for being members of the winning foursome, both pocketed cash as closest-to-the-pin winners.
Wagner was top gun on No. 2 where he swatted to within 18 feet, 7 inches of the flag.
On No. 14, Kuhns was victorious with a tee shot that rolled to within 4 feet, 6 inches of an ace.
Other winners were Tom Dahl (No. 5; 6 feet, 5-half inches), Larry Smith (No. 8; 9 feet, 1 inch and Jim Dalgleish (No. 17; 19 inches).
In the team standings, the foursome of Troy Neal, Richard Harding, Ed McFall and Ed West took second with a low net of 188.
With a 191, Chip Yeomans, Ron Fisher, John Calderwood and Herb Sherman were third.
On July 13, 20 and 27, members will lock horns in one of the association’s major tournaments of the summer.
The traditionally fiercely contested Club Championship is played annually in a low net, match play format.
The defending champion Jessie Smith took top honors in the 2010 fray by defeating Tim Ernst 2 up 1 during the final round at Payson Golf Course.
In 2009, he came up just short of the title, losing a 2 up 1 heartbreaker to Frank Szakal.
Other major tournaments yet to be played include the Presidents Cup on Aug. 24 and 31 and the state championship two-man scramble on Sept. 21.
