Hello again, fellow Creekers.
Anyone ever wonder about the quality of the creek water? Not long ago a volunteer organization was formed up here called TWIG, which is short for Tonto Watershed Improvement Group.
In a short time, TWIG was officially formed, applied for and won a grant, and has been working with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) ever since. Here is the latest report.
Great news. ADEQ sampled 13 sites along Tonto Creek and Christopher Creek on June 29-30, and only one E. coli bacteria single sample maximum exceedance occurred.
The single exceedance was attributed to an animal carcass observed at the parking area of the site. The creeks were at base flow conditions, with low turbidity (<13 NTU) and values ranged from <1 cfu/100 mL at Tonto Spring to 345.5 cfu/100 mL above Kohl’s Ranch at the site just below the Highway 260 bridge (this value is an average of two duplicate samples: 365.4 and 325.5 cfu/100 mL).
Remember that ADEQ’s single sample maximum full body contact water quality standard is 235 cfu/100 mL, so Tonto’s and Christopher’s water quality was meeting the standard at 12 of 13 sites! (and the 13th was a rare, easily explainable cause). The full nutrient reports will be provided to TWIG in four to six weeks from this trip.
It’s great to know that our water continues to be exceptionally clean and well taken care of, and that an organization made up of folks who really care are carefully monitoring it.
Also, Pat Guevara asked me to let people know about the annual vacation Bible school at Christopher Creek Bible Fellowship. Come join them on this beautiful mountaintop on July 11 to July 15 at 9 a.m. to noon for fun learning activities and adventures including games, snacks, music and more. The theme this year is: “Big Apple Adventure.” For more information, contact Teresa Purtee at 478-4337.
As always, I do need your help with content and stories! For anyone wanting to submit information from the Christopher Creek area for inclusion in our weekly article, please e-mail me at: email@example.com. Any submitted pictures must be full-size (typically around 1MB per picture). The cutoff time for inclusion in Friday’s article is close of business on Monday.
