You’ll have two opportunities to get your vehicle cleaned up following the recent monsoon storms, and help out a good cause at the same time. Payson Area Habitat for Humanity will host a car wash (including trucks and RVs) from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 16 at the Jiffy Lube, located at 160 E. Highway 260. There will be root beer floats and raffle tickets on sale as well. Payson Care Center employees will be washing cars and selling root beer floats from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 16 at 107 E. Lone Pine Drive. They are raising money to help fellow Payson Care employee Susan Shickey with the cost of her cancer treatments.

Payson High School registration this week

Payson High School begins the 2011-2012 school year registration this week.

New students to the district in grades 9-12 will register from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 12; and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, July 21.

New students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) must start the registration process at the Special Services Office, 902 W. Main St. Call (928) 472-5800 for an appointment.

Returning students in grades 9-12 may register from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 13; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 14; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, July 18; 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 19; and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 20.

Registration July 13, July 14 and July 18 is for students that do not require schedule changes. Students with schedule changes are to register on July 19 and July 20.

Payson Care offers free screenings

Payson Care Center is offering free screenings to the community: balance assessment for fall prevention and posture screening.

The balance assessment screening is at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 14 at the Payson Senior Center. The posture screening will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 4 at Majestic Rim and at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 11 at the Senior Center. Reservations are required. Call (928) 951-2305.

Cenpatico invites the family members of its clients to a Family Involvement Discussion from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, July 15 at Southwest Behavioral Health (Rim) Empowerment Center, 107 E. Aero Dr., Payson.

Those attending will be encouraged to let staff know if they are getting everything needed from the Child and Family Team or Adult Recovery Team serving them; if it is hard to understand what is expected and how to get needs met; ask questions and make suggestions; and what is helpful.

Habitat car wash

The Payson Area Habitat for Humanity is having a car wash (as well as trucks and RVs) from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 16 at the Jiffy Lube located at 160 E. Highway 260 in Payson. In addition to washing vehicles, the Habitat folks will be selling root beer floats and raffle tickets for some great prizes.

Round Valley Trail hike

Rim Country residents and visitors can take part in upcoming free group hikes on the Payson Area Trails System, hosted by the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.

At 8 a.m., Saturday, July 16 there will be a hike of the Round Valley Trail, which is rated at moderate difficulty and is 4.5 miles. Hikers will meet at the South Phoenix Trail Access, which is approximately a mile east of Highway 87 on the south side of Phoenix Street, north of the traffic light on 87 at the Payson Event Center and Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. Turn right on South Gibson Court and the trail access will be on the right.

Be sure to wear hiking boots and bring water.

Classic Car Show

The Rim Country Classic Auto Club will have members’ collector vehicles on display in Rumsey Park Saturday, July 16 as part of the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Key Ingredients: America by Food, being hosted by the Payson Public Library with assistance from the Arizona Humanities Council.

There is no admission to either the car show or Smithsonian exhibit, which will be at the library and open to the public during regular business hours through Aug. 7. Rumsey Park and the library are located at 328 N. McLane Road.

Benefit car wash

The Payson Care Center is having a benefit car wash from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, July 16.

The fund-raising event is for Susan Shickey, an employee of Payson Care since it opened in 1985. She was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing extensive treatments in the Valley.

Tickets are being pre-sold at the Payson Care Center or can be purchased the day of the car wash. The tickets are being sold on a donation basis. Shickey’s fellow employees at Payson Care Center will be washing the cars. The day of the car wash, root beer floats will also be sold and again donations will be accepted.

Pie Contest results

It was great fun last week at the Payson Farmers Market Pie Baking Contest. The winners were: People’s Choice, Diane Ash’s Farmers Bounty Pie featuring 5 kinds of berries; Most Original Pie, Nancy Guyon’s Blueberry Rhubarb; Best Pie, Hannah Birchak’s Dulce De Leche Apple; Best Pie 2nd Place, Nancy Guyon’s Blueberry Rhubarb; Best Pie 3rd Place, Mary Fitzpatrick’s Granny Smith Apple Pie.

Thank you to our judges, Stephanie Landers, Frank LaSpisa and Chris Higgins and all the great customers who ate hundreds of samples and voted for People’s Choice.

The Payson Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at 816 S. Beeline Highway, behind Chili’s.

Biography writing workshop

Learn about writing a biography, conducting research, interviewing techniques, how to get published and more when Jan Cleere, author of the newly released “Levi’s & Lace: Arizona Women Who Made History,” gives a keynote presentation on Saturday, July 16. The workshop includes lunch and runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church at 800 W. Main St. in Payson.

This workshop, sponsored by the Rim Country District of the Arizona Press Women, is open to the public. Advance reservations are required. The $25 early bird reservation deadline is Wednesday, July 13 (includes luncheon). Thereafter, the fee is $30 per person at the door.
