Parents Face School Registration Flurry

For Payson families with school-age children, six weeks of summer vacation have passed and the first day of school looms on Wednesday, July 27.

Many students will end up in new schools this year, as the district moves to close Frontier Elementary School and change the grade-level line ups for the two remaining elementary schools.

Meanwhile, middle school students will have to adjust to a major overhaul in the class schedules this semester.

Students can register on the first day of classes, but the district hopes that parents will reduce the confusion by showing up on campus for early registration.

Parents should have already received advanced registration packets.

Below are dates and details for registering students at one of the four schools in the Payson Unified School District:

Payson Elementary: grades K – 2

Kindergarten registration has been ongoing all summer. Register at any time before school starts.

All kindergartners and students new to the school need a birth certificate and immunization records to register.

Office hours are between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Classes start promptly at 8 a.m. on July 27.

PES will host an open house on July 26 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Meet the teachers and tour the school.

Julia Randall Elementary: grades 3 – 5

New students to the Payson school system need to register.

JRE offices open from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Classes start at 8 a.m. on July 27.

An information packet will go home on the first day of school for parents to fill out for school records.

JRE will host an open house on July 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., so parents can tour the school and meet the teachers and staff.

Rim Country Middle School: grades 6 – 8

Registration packets were sent out on July 8. Reduce confusion by turning in registration packets on the day set aside for each grade. Register on the assigned date between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.:

• Eighth grade – July 18

• Seventh grade – July 19

• Sixth grade – July 20

However, parents who miss those assigned dates have another chance on July 21 from 8 a.m. to noon. Parents can also register students on the first day of classes, which start at 8:20 a.m. on July 27.

Parents are urged to meet the sixth-grade teachers at an open house on Friday, July 22, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. This orientation will allow new students to familiarize themselves with the campus, their schedule and teachers.

Payson High School for grades 9 – 12

Registration packets were sent out on June 24. The district urges parents to turn in registration materials on the following schedule.

Grades 9-12 with no schedule changes – July 13 (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.); July 14 (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.); July 18 (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

Grades 9-12 with schedule changes: July 19 (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.); July 20 (2 p.m. to 7 p.m.)

Students can still register on July 27, when classes start at 8:20 a.m.

All freshmen (grade 9) students must attend an afternoon orientation on July 26 from 11:30 a.m.until 3:30 p.m.

Buses will transport students to and from orientation. Lunch will not be served, but a snack will.
