Campfires Now Allowed In Campgrounds

The clouds have finally let their moisture fall over Tonto Village in measurable amounts of rain.

According to our neighbor, who has a rain gauge, the rainfall since Sunday night, was a 1-1/4 inches. Last week, there was about three-quarters of an inch of rainfall. So far, that measures about 2 inches for July. That amount is not nearly enough according to the Forest Service to open the forest to campers. The restrictions are still in place except for established campgrounds with camp hosts. Campfires will be allowed at those camp sites, but nowhere else within Tonto National Forest. For more information, call the Payson Ranger Station at 928-474-7900.

Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary

The Fireflies Auxiliary held their July meeting on July 11 at the Tonto Village station. Karen Carlen, the administrative assistant at the Star Valley station, was the featured speaker.

Karen was very informative on firewise, (which is making your property easier for firefighters to save your home in case of a forest fire), and evacuation procedures. Karen told the Fireflies that they may become a vital part of assisting evacuating procedures and could be centering all information through the Tonto Village station.

There will be more information in the future for the Fireflies with the firefighter staff to educate the Fireflies in how to handle emergency situations. Karen introduced the Fireflies to a program entitled “Ready, Set, Go.” The program helps people get ready for an evacuation. More information is available on the Internet. The site is: www.ready.gov.

The Fireflies thank Karen for coming to the meeting and sharing her knowledge with the Fireflies regarding firewise and evacuation procedures.

The Fireflies will be selling raffle tickets at Bashas’ Supermarket on Highway 260 on Saturday, July 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The raffle items are a 20-inch Husqvarna chain saw, a food card from Bashas’ for $300, and a gas card from Giant gas stations for $200. The cost of the tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

The Fireflies are also asking the businesses for raffle donations in Payson for raffle items that will be “bundled.” Susan Warwick will be the person who will be visiting the businesses.

If there is a business that would like to donate an item, please call Susan at 476-2121. The tickets can be purchased from any Firefly or call Dara Sutton at 478-0052 for a Firefly near you.

Labor Day Barbecue

The annual Labor Day Barbecue will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Tonto Village fire station from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is the biggest fund-raiser for the Fireflies and benefits the Hellsgate firefighters. The menu will be a pork barbecue sandwich, coleslaw, beans, and fresh corn on the cob, (the peaches and cream variety, which is deliciously sweet), for $7.

A hot dog meal will also be available including coleslaw, beans and corn for $5. For the kids 10 and under the price of the meal will be $3.

A bake sale will also be held during the dinner. Hopefully, if we all have a good gardening season, there will be many home-canned items such as relishes, pickles, jams and pies. The apple trees look very good this year after a drought of about five years without the apples because of frost hitting the blossoms, so look for anything apple to be available.

The next Fireflies meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 2 at the Tonto Village fire station. The meeting will start at 9 a.m. If you would like to join the Fireflies, please attend one of the meetings or contact President Dara Sutton at 478-0052.

If you would like to help at the barbecue, that can also be arranged. It is so rewarding to be able to help your community, and the firefighters and by your participation, also helping yourself to become a vital part of your community.

There will be a Basic EMT class offered at the Hellsgate Fire Station in Star Valley beginning on Aug. 22. There are still openings available, applications can be picked up at the fire station in Star Valley Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The class will continue until December.
