A 17-year-old San Tan Valley boy died and his brother was flown to a Scottsdale hospital after their dune buggy crashed into a tree Tuesday, trapping both.

The 17-year-old was riding in the buggy with his 19-year-old brother for a test drive when the 19-year-old lost control and drove head-on into a large tree on Forest Road 181, approximately two miles off the Young Road, said Gerry Blair, with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

The teen’s father, who was camping nearby with other family members, found the boys trapped in the buggy and called for help.

First responders cut the top off the buggy and removed both teens.

Paramedics brought the 17-year-old to a helicopter landing area, but before the helicopter arrived, paramedics pronounced him deceased.

The 19-year-old was flown to the Scottsdale Osborne Level One Trauma Center.

Deputies and detectives are continuing this investigation.
