Crime is never fun, but have fun taking a stand against it this Saturday and Tuesday.

The 28th Annual National Night Out kicks off at noon Saturday at Green Valley Park and runs until 8 p.m.

Payson Police officers, along with town employees, will provide crime prevention information, free games and prizes for the whole family.

Music from the Technicolors, Junction 87 and DJ Johnny Vela is also on the agenda.

Local police officers will square off against firefighters in a relay race and the SWAT team and K-9s will put on a demonstration.

Last year, the whole event was cancelled due to rain.

Organizers are hoping for clear skies and a record crowd this year.

On Tuesday, officers encourage residents to hold a block party during National Night Out.

The purpose of the block parties is to encourage neighbors to get to know each other, watch out for each other and send the message to criminals that crime is not allowed in Payson.

Anyone who would like to host a block party can call or stop by the police department, at 303 N. Beeline Highway, for more information.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved more than 15,000 communities across the country with more than 37 million people participating.

National Night Out founder Matt Peskin said the event is a great way for communities to promote neighborhood camaraderie.

“While the one night is certainly not an answer to crime, drugs and violence, National Night Out does represent the kind of spirit, energy and determination that is helping to make many neighborhoods safer places throughout the year,” he said.
