Tonto Village honored our veterans Saturday by holding a Memorial Weekend breakfast. Jim Dooley (85) was one of our honored guests. Jim is a WWII Army veteran from 1943 to 1946 (joining the service when he was 17 years old), who parachuted into France and walked with General Patton in Germany. The following day, Jim hosted a family reunion of 90 relatives in Ellison Creek Summer Homes. Jim is the proud father of 10 children.
Tonto Village was almost filled to the brim with part-time residents, their families and many newcomers to our village, thanks in part to the Memorial Weekend breakfast sponsored by the Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary, the Fireflies.
There were many activities throughout the surrounding communities, but the breakfast turned out to be very successful. The business community was very helpful with donations for the raffle items. They included Messinger Funeral Home, Rim Country Lanes, Fletcher’s, Bashas’, Home Depot, Walmart and Plant Fair Nursery. A huge thank-you for your contributions. The winners of the raffle items were Taylor Trujillo of Mead Ranch, who won the back pack; and Lennie Trujillo and Shawn McGee, who won the bundles of gift cards.
Tickets are still being sold for the big raffle items such as the Husquevarna 20-inch chain saw, the $300 Bashas’ food card, and the $200 Giant gas card. The Fireflies will be selling tickets throughout the summer, and the drawing will be held at the Labor Day BBQ on Sept. 3. All Fireflies have the tickets to sell, or contact Dara at 478-0052 and she can direct you to the Firefly nearest you.
All the Fireflies worked so well together this year that all areas went well without a hitch.
Dara would like to thank all the people who helped to make this year’s breakfast a success, and that included all the firefighters who had to get up so early to set up the tables and chairs, and to Bill Fausz and Bill Snyder who also got an early start to set out the signs on the Control Road.
There are so many people to thank and you know who you are, and you deserve a big pat on the back. The Fireflies do not work these fund-raisers for ourselves but for our hardworking firefighters who protect our communities. Thank you, Hellsgate firefighters.
The bake sale was a resounding success; all the baked goods were sold out. Janet Snyder wishes to thank her committee for the fantastic work on the bake sale — they are Penny Wells and Marilyn Lamb, also Theresa Meeker, and Dara Sutton who helped me distribute the flyers and helped to call the donors for the baked goods. What a fine crew. Thank you!!!
Hellsgate Fire Department
There have been many calls to the Star Valley fire station in relation to the smoke that is hovering around the town, including Bear Flat.
It is surmised that the smoke is coming from the Alpine Fire. There are now three forest fires in the area, including the Happy Jack Fire, it now stands at 40 acres, and the Horseshoe Fire which is now only 40-percent contained.
A crew of four firefighters from Hellsgate Fire Department has been deployed to help out with that one. Keep those firefighters in your thoughts for their safe return.
Hellsgate Engineer Bob Evanson has lost his brother, who passed away this weekend. Condolences to you, Bob, and your family for your loss. Our prayers are with you.
Double D doings
The Tonto Village ladies swept the tables when they got together for their weekly games of nine ball. The winners were Ethel Cain, Kara Shaw and Bobbie Davis.
Thursday evening, the fellows held their weekly pool competition and Tim Reed, Ron Desrochers and Kevin Were the top three winners. Congratulations to all the winners.
