Hoop Legends Head Youth Camps

When Little Longhorn Basketball Camp coaches Bill Farrell and Ed Charles speak, it’s best the campers listen intently because the two have reputations as being among the finest coaches in the country, whether it be youth ball, high school competition or college action.

The pair, both now retired, host the youth camp, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., June 20 to June 24 in Wilson Dome.

Camp registration fee is $45 and all proceeds benefit the PHS program.

The focus of the camp is to teach fundamentals coupled with life skills and character education

“I enjoy working with the young kids and teaching them,” Farrell said.

Since spring, both Farrell and Charles have been hosting open gym for the young players on Thursday evenings.

The upcoming camp is an extension of those sessions.

First-year PHS boys basketball coach Joe Sanchez is among those who understands the importance of having two veteran, highly respected coaches, like Farrell and Charles, on hand to teach the young, impressionable players.

“Both (coaches) grab the players’ attention and it’s huge to have them contributing,” said Sanchez. “We are very fortunate to have them.”

Charles was a longtime head coach at Quincy, Ill. High School, helping build the Blue Devil program into one of the finest in a state that is a basketball hotbed.

“He is a Quincy Hall of Fame coach,” said PHS AD Rob Varner.

Farrell is a legend in Arizona basketball, having been the Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1997 and once chosen the region coach of the year. At Paradise Valley High, a school where he coached for years, the gymnasium has been named after him.

Over the years, he’s coached three high school All-Americans, several All State Players, a state player of the year and has worked as an assistant director at John McLeod’s Suns Basketball Camp and the Cotton Fitzsimmons Camp.

To participate in the camp, athletes need only to show up for the first day dressed out and ready to participate.

However, Sanchez would like potential campers to e-mail him prior to the start of camp so the correct number of camp T-shirts, prizes and awards can be ordered.

Sanchez can be reached at spdygonzo_3 @hotmail.com.
