Taking The Hard Out Of The Hardwood

Former Lady Longhorn basketball coach Grant Cooley, who led the team to one of its finest seasons in 2007 winning the 3A East region championship, has laced up his sneakers and is set to host a youth girls camp.

Current Lady Horn coach Kelly Krieg will also work the camp.

The camp, which will be 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16, is open to girls entering grades five to nine next school year.

The fee is $25 for both days or $10 for one day.

To participate, fledgling players should simply show up in old Payson High School gym on the first day of camp and be “dressed out” and ready to practice.

Cooley says “the whole gamut” of skills will be taught, including shooting mechanics, rebounding, dribbling, passing and defense.

In teaching those individual and team skills, Cooley and Krieg will use a series of time-tested drills that are simple, fun and effective.

Cooley says he enjoys coaching at the camp because “he wants to keep his hand” in the sport, but the real reason for the sessions is to help prepare the girls for play whether it be in parks and recreation leagues, at Rim Country Middle School or Payson High School.

In addition to hosting the camp, Cooley holds an “open gym” for girls in fifth- through ninth-grade from 9 a.m. to noon each Wednesday at Rim Country Middle School.

During those hours, players can practice their skills, play pick-up games and receive advice and help from Cooley.
