Local teachers dominated the first Gila County Teacher of the Year awards ceremony June 3 in Globe, taking four of the five awards.
Julia Randall Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Wayne Gorry took home the Teacher of the Year award for grades fourth through eighth.
Payson High School culinary teacher Devon Wells won the Cross-Grades or Cross-Curriculum Specialist award and agriculture instructor Jadee Garner was honored as the outstanding first-year teacher.
Gorry also tied with Teresa Gardner from the Young School District for overall Gila County Teacher of the Year.
The Gila County Education Service Agency, which is administered by the Gila County School Superintendent’s Office, sponsored the first Gila County Teacher of the Year program. Seven applications were received by the agency and a three-person selection committee made its selections based on a rating system and telephone interviews. The winner in each category received an award and plaque.
