Cody, Burns Win Payson Women’S Memorial Tournament


The highlight for the Payson Women’s Golf Association for the month of May was the annual Memorial Tournament held May 31.

The tournament ended in a tie, so the winning team had to be determined by a playoff. Taking top honors was the team of Shari Cody and Jan Burns, with Marcy Hewlett and Lois Judd coming in second. Third place went to Judy McFall and Mary Cain. Closest-to-the-Pin winners were Marcy Hewlett on #8 and Karen Peterson on #14.

Weekly play in May began with a “Pity Party” on May 10, where each player was allowed to throw out their four worst holes. Winning the A Flight was Karen Peterson; B Flight honors went to Judy McFall, with Susan Torrens coming in second. Winning the C Flight was Alesha Calderwood, followed by Kay Davis; Karol Uptain won the D Flight, with Jeanne Griffin taking second. Closest-to-the-Pin on #5 was Claudia Thompson.

The team of Jan Burns and Shari Cody prevailed in the PWGA Memorial Tourney.

On May 17, the league played a 2-Person Alternate Shot format. Winning the event was the team of Susan Torrens and Claudia Thompson. Marcy Hewlett and Marilyn Schaal were second and Shari Cody and Jeanne Griffin came in third. Closest-to-the-Pin on #8 was won by Marcy Hewlett and Claudia Bullard won the CTP on #14.

On May 24, players could only use four clubs. The A Flight was won by Claudia Bullard. There was a tie for second between Karen Peterson and Marcy Hewlett.

The B Flight was won by Alesha Calderwood, with another tie for second between Mary Jones and Sharon Vaplon. Earlene Brewer won the C Flight, with Jeanne Griffin and Isabella Sockrider tying for second place.

The only eagle recorded in May was by Claudia Bullard. Birdies for the month included Claudia Bullard, Jeanne Griffin, Karen Peterson (6), Earlene Brewer, Marcy Hewlett (3), Judy McFall (2) and Lois Judd (2). May chip-ins were recorded by Karen Peterson and Lois Judd.
