Extreme fire danger in the forests surrounding our communities is a great reason to clear your property of brush, weeds, leaves and pine needles to reduce wildfire risk and to create a defensible space around your home. You can dispose of your greenwaste for free at the Blattner Pit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25; at the Pine Pit from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26; or at Buckhead Mesa Landfill from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25 and Saturday, July 2. Garden Tour tickets available

The Rim Area Gardeners will host their annual Mogollon Garden Tour Saturday, June 25.

Tickets are $5 per person and can be bought at the Pine and Payson libraries, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, at Ace Hardware, Plant Fair Nursery and Payson Jewelers.

There will be six gardens featured in the tour and each will have a guest artist or musician on site.

Smithsonian exhibit ribbon cutting

The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting and grand opening for “Key Ingredients,” the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit at Payson Public Library, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, June 24. The evening will feature the exhibit and refreshments. Reservations are required, RSVP with the library, (928) 474-9260.

Free greenwaste drop

The Gila County Board of Supervisors will waive the landfill fees for greenwaste on two Saturdays to allow the residents to clear their property of weeds and brush to protect their homes from fire danger.

On Saturday, June 25 and Saturday, July 2, greenwaste will be accepted from residents at the landfills at no charge. Greenwaste includes tree limbs, pine needles, brush, grass clippings, weeds and leaves. All other trash will be regular price.

The hours for the Buckhead Mesa Landfill are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. It is closed Sundays and Monday, July 4. For more information, call the landfill scalehouse at (928) 476-3350.

RPAP Brush Pit Schedule

The Regional Payson Area Project… for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

Saturday, June 25 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson,

Sunday, June 26 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned. No household garbage, construction debris or other items will be accepted.

RPAP brush pits are intended for the use of private citizens who are working to clear their properties for wildfire risk reduction and to create defensible space around their homes. They are not intended for commercial use, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.

‘Extreme Couponing’ class part of Smithsonian exhibit

The Payson Public Library will open its Smithsonian exhibit, “Key Ingredients: America by Food” on Saturday, June 25. The exhibit will remain at the library until Sunday, Aug. 7 and features a variety of special programs. The exhibit is free.

One of the first programs is a class, “Extreme Couponing” with Monica Vaughn from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 28. The class is free, but registration is required. Seating is limited to 30 people (no children please), and there is a sign-up sheet for a second class. The second class will be offered if enough people register.

Jam at the Elks

The Payson Elks Lodge welcomes guests to a Saturday Afternoon Jam Session at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 25. The Payson Elks Lodge is at 1206 N. Beeline Highway.

Eastern Star dinner features Hot Chicken Salad

The Ponderosa Chapter 64 of the Order of the Eastern Star will have a Hot Chicken Salad Dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 25 at the Masonic Lodge, 200 E. Rancho Road (behind the fire station).

Open to the public, the menu will include Hot Chicken Salad, green beans, peach half with cranberry on lettuce, rolls and butter, iced tea, coffee and dessert. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children 12 and younger. Tickets will be sold at the door.

Dixieland jazz

The Saturday, June 25 Concert Under the Stars in Payson’s Green Valley Park will feature the Dixieland jazz sounds of Dr Jass & The Heartbeats. The free concert is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the amphitheater area of the park at the end of Historic West Main in Payson.

Dr. Jass & The Heartbeats includes: Dr. Claudio Zamorano, trumpet; Robert Tarallo, Clarinet; Dale Knighton, banjo; Larry Brasen, bass; Gerry Reynolds, drums; and special guest Benji Messer, trombone.

Sponsored by the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department, there will be refreshments available. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

June 26 Sunday

The Rim Country Literacy Program’s Hooray for Hollywood movie classic fund-raiser scheduled for Sunday, June 26 has been cancelled.
