Payson’s Club Rim 16-year-old volleyball team was honored to participate in the Lone Star Classic at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas April 22-24, 2011. Thanks to generous donations, our girls had the opportunity of a lifetime. They competed among 1,200 teams comprised of more than 14,000 athletes from more than 26 states, on 99 volleyball courts. The Lone Star Classic is the largest Junior National qualifying volleyball tournament in the United States.
Club Rim girls competed to the best of their ability and gained knowledge and confidence, which will be valuable as they compete again next year at the Lone Star Classic. Our coaches and players proudly represented Club Rim and the community of Payson. Coaches Ibarra and Beeler, Karessa Armstrong, Emmee Ashby, Jaden Brunson, Kaylee Byers, Morgan DiFelice, Shalea Garza, Shayna Neal, Kyleah Morgan, Cierra Rose and the entire Club Rim Board of Directors wish to express our appreciation and gratitude.
Special thanks are extended to the following groups and individuals who made this trip possible: The Tonto Apache Tribe donated $4,510 to cover the flight to Dallas; Steve Loy, who recently purchased Chaparral Pines, donated $2,500. Other sponsors included PostNet, Dr. Mark Ivey, Anderson Dental, Lloyd & Robinson P.L.L.C., Chili’s, Payson Dental, Dr. and Mrs. Munoz, Dr. Dacanay, Safeway and Cars Body Shop of Payson. Without these wonderful sponsors, this opportunity would not have been possible.
From their fund-raising efforts, the girls have already secured enough money for their entry fee for the 2012 Lone Star Classic. Next season, Club Rim plans to send both the 16- and 17-year-old teams to Dallas to compete in this Junior National qualifying volleyball tournament.
The week following the Lone Star Classic, the Club Rim 16-year-old volleyball team competed in the Arizona Region of USA Volleyball State Championship. The self-confidence and self-esteem acquired through their participation in a national qualifying tournament reflected in their play. Payson’s Club Rim 16-year-old volleyball team finished fourth place in the state. This is the highest finish by any Club Rim volleyball team in the history of the club.
The 2011 season also demonstrated the highest finish by a Club Rim 12-year-old team. The girls began the season ranked 48th in the state. They finished the season 24th which is remarkable for girls just beginning their volleyball knowledge and skills. Club Rim’s 14-year-old volleyball team finished fourth in the 14AA Flight 3 Division Champions. This was again a successful season for Club Rim volleyball.
This year Club Rim held a raffle to assist Club Rim athletes defray the cost of their membership. Seventy-one local and state businesses and sports organizations donated prizes for the raffle. This year the raffle raised $8,430 toward club fees.
