Forest Wildfires Nearly Controlled

Three forest fires in northern Arizona, including one that started Thursday, are nearly contained with crews reinforcing hundreds of miles of enforcement lines.

Firefighters have wrangled in the Wallow, Willow and Wash Fires and hope to have full containment on several of them later this week.

The Willow Fire, the closest at 25 miles northeast of Payson, is mostly snuffed as of Monday morning, with crews mopping up remaining hot spots.

The same is true for the Wash Fire, which erupted Thursday afternoon near Heber-Overgaard. The fire burned quickly, eating its way through 2,000 acres. Luckily, crews contained the blaze in only a few days.

Officials expect full containment of the fire by Wednesday with the Black Mesa Ranger District taking over management from the Eastern Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team Monday night.

To date, it has cost more than $1.5 million to fight the Wash Fire.
