Head-On Crash Claims Life Of Goodyear Woman

A 60-year-old Goodyear woman died and two others were taken to the hospital after a head-on collision on Highway 260 east of Star Valley Feb. 18.

Mona Kerrin was traveling in a 2005 Honda Pilot with Michael Hanzlick, 64, also of Goodyear, when police believe Hanzlick fell asleep at the wheel around 11:20 p.m.

Hanzlick told officers the last thing he remembered was driving westbound, hearing a loud pop and feeling the vehicle spin, said Gila County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Adam Shepherd.

The Pilot had hit head on with a 1994 Dodge pickup.

When officers arrived on scene, Kerrin was dead.

Pickup driver Ernita Tsosie, 54, of Wide Ruins, Ariz. said she and passenger Keith Begay, 45, of Klagetoh, Ariz. were traveling eastbound when they saw headlights coming toward them.

Tsosie said she flashed her headlights, but the Pilot’s lights came closer. She braked and swerved to avoid the small car, but they hit near milepost 258, Shepherd said.

Tsosie was taken to Payson Regional Medical Center and Begay airlifted to a Scottsdale hospital.

Officers believe alcohol was not a factor.

The roadway was blocked for some time with the Hellsgate Fire Department, Payson Police Department, Arizona Department of Transportation, Department of Public Safety and GCSO on scene.
