The month of February left Tonto Village with one of the coldest mornings we have had this winter.
Our thermometer measured 6 degrees at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. I would think that there were colder places going up the Control Road since the elevation is a bit higher. The snow level most likely is higher also. The snow started falling late Saturday evening and continued until Sunday afternoon. From our unofficial measuring, Tonto Village received about 5 inches.
The Gila County maintenance crew needs a pat on the back for their quick work of plowing the streets in the Village. The crew started plowing even before the snow had stopped so that when the sun came out the roads were clear. Thank you to all the workers, you did an excellent job of clearing the streets.
Women’s Wellness Forum
It’s that time again for the annual Women’s Wellness Forum. I have participated in this program sponsored by the Mogollon Health Alliance for 10 years and I have enjoyed every year. This year the forum will be held on Saturday, March 12 at Payson High School. Registration is only $10 for all day breakout sessions, continental breakfast and a sack lunch.
The topics are always very informative and the keynote speaker this year is Elaine Lundberg, who is a humor therapist. Call the Mogollon Health Alliance at 472-2588 to register for a very informative day.
Hellsgate Fire Department
The next fire board meeting has been called by fire board president Dick Pinkerton and the meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at the Star Valley fire station. The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and comments and suggestions are welcome.
The Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary is planning a brief workshop in a few weeks. President Dara Sutton has said that the workshop will be held before the first official meeting of the auxiliary in April. The date for that first meeting is on Monday, April 4 at 1 p.m. at the Tonto Village fire station.
The months are going fast, so make sure you put that date on your calendar. The Fireflies will be planning the annual Memorial Weekend Breakfast for the last week in May. One raffle item is ready to go and we are so excited! Each year our main item is a chainsaw.
This year, Chief Hatch has worked with Harry at The Rock Yard on getting us a saw that is on the edge of professional and what we have is a Husqvarna 455 Rancher, 2.4 horsepower, 20-inch chainsaw. Just the name itself sounds impressive, but to see it and to know of its capabilities is fantastic! Firefighters know this chainsaw by the name “Husky.”
The Fireflies will be selling raffle tickets now and they are $1 each or six for $5. Thank you Chief Hatch for helping us with this very important purchase and a huge thank you to Harry at The Rock Yard. You rock! There will also be discussion of the other items that will be raffled off. The date for the workshop has not been set yet, so for more information, call Dara at 478-0052.
Kent Mortenson of Tonto Village III and Tempe along with Marsha Ward of Christopher Creek will celebrate their birthdays on March 12.
Jenny Wegner Scott, branch manager of the National Bank will add another candle to her birthday cake on March 16. We have known Jenny since we lived in Yuma and Jenny managed the National Bank in the Foothills. Jenny is a special friend and we wish her well. Another person from the National Bank who is a special person is Neloa Beeler. Neloa is operations specialist and she celebrates her birthday on March 17. Happy birthday to each and everyone of you. Here’s hoping your day is a keepsake to hold in your heart forever.
Double D Doings
Last Tuesday evening the nine-ball gals played at the ‘D’ for their weekly competition with the Christopher Creek gals. Tonto Village swamped the team from Christopher Creek. Kara Shaw, a consistent winner, shot for first place, followed by second-place winner Ethel Cain and Betty Koutz played for third place.
Thursday evening the men’s competition took to the pool tables. The winners were Ron Desrochers, John Watson and Harvey Poyner.
Congratulations to all the winners.
