Hummingbird, Robin Harbingers Of Spring

The weather in Tonto Village is giving out mixed signals. One day, it looks as if winter is behind us and the next, the weather has turned cold with the threat of snow.

One harbinger of things to come is that I spotted a hummingbird on Monday. The hummer had a red head, so I am guessing it could have been a Costa’s. On the other hand, it may have also been an Anna’s. Now is the time to put out at least one feeder. My neighbor suggested that a bit more sugar be added to the nectar for a few weeks. I also spotted a robin in our yard last week, so the weather seems very promising for the oncoming spring season.

I have heard reports that this summer will be a dry one, so that means that the fire season and wildfires will start early. Let’s be mindful of that fact since we live in the forest. Be careful of sparks from campfires and burning of brush and leaves. Please let your fire station know of the burn and obtain a burn permit. In the Star Valley area, the Hellsgate fire station number is 928-474-3835 and in Tonto Village the number is 928-478-0405.

Hellsgate Fire Department

If the weather holds out, the fuels grant is now in effect. Contractors who are licensed, bonded and insured, will be eligible to apply by open bids for the clearing of HOAs, such as the Bear Flat area, Thompson Draw I and II and Diamond Point phase 3. The bidding process begins next week and all qualified contractors are urged to call Chief Hatch at station #21 at 474-3835. The clearing would start on March 18.

The selection process for reserve firefighters has started. The volunteers will be selected and contacted by office personnel ASAP.

There will be a “Heart Saver” first aid class sponsored by the Payson Fire Department on March 12 at suite #11 on Main Street. Call Monica at the fire department’s office at 474-3385 if you are interested in this class.

Congratulations to Nick Fitch on his recent promotion to fire captain. And to Matt Highstreet on his promotion to fire lieutenant.

Congratulations to Len Trujillo of the Mead Ranch fire station on his two years of service to the Hellsgate Fire Department. John Jackson has also completed two years with the fire department. Keep up the good work and thanks for your dedication to the department.

Karen Carlen who is the administrative assistant in the main office in Star Valley will be on vacation from March 16 to March 22. Have a restful time off, Karen.

The Fireflies Auxiliary has set the date for the workshop session. The date is Monday, March 21 at the meeting room at the Tonto Village station. The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. Under discussion will be the upcoming fund-raisers, the raffle items to be offered and the direction the gals want to go in for the next year. All gals are welcome from the surrounding area.

The Fireflies will be coming out of “darkness” with their first official meeting at 1 p.m., Monday, April 4. The meeting will be in the meeting room at the Tonto Village fire station.

Again, all gals are welcome to be at the meeting. Volunteers are welcomed for the upcoming fund-raisers. Not only to work, but the companionship and friendliness of being together for a good cause is worthwhile, so come and join in the activities.

The Tonto Village Chapel will be the location for a beginning Bible study on Thursday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to noon. The class will be taught by Pamela Furubotten. The subject will be “What the numbers mean in the Scriptures?”

Also at the chapel beginning sometime in April will be a beginning art class. The classes will be on Tuesdays starting at 1 p.m. The date has not been firmed up as of now, but it will be announced in this column in the next few weeks. All mediums will be explored. How about crayons? That’s all I have since I have no talent in this particular area. It will be fun exploring just what kind of medium suits your particular style.

The birthdays for the rest of March include: Fire Lieutenant Matt Highstreet on March 6, firefighter Nick (Trey) Shill on March 7, and firefighter Billy McCave on March 15.
