Not every gym gives you the opportunity to work out at 2 a.m. and not every gym has an instructor on duty 24 hours a day.
Anytime Fitness of Payson will have both.
The new gym, still under construction, is conveniently located between McDonald’s and Urgent Care.
The facility will feature 24-hour access via a key card, and technology that allows members to take a Pilates or yoga class even in the middle of the night.
Put in fitness terms: the technology at Anytime Fitness is ripped — with a state-of-the-art security system, the latest fitness equipment, individual cable TV access on most exercise machines and virtual classes.
Using a kiosk situated outside a group exercise room, a gym member can select the class they want to take, a screen will automatically lower in the room and a projector will display the class.
“People like it because it feels like it is their personal gym,” said Kristen Graving, who is opening the new gym with her husband Robert Graving. “You feel like you have exclusive rights to come in anytime.”
The 24-hour feature is great for firefighters, police officers, medical personnel and anyone who works odd hours.
“It is a thing of convenience,” she said.
Anytime Fitness, a Minnesota-based company, has more than 1,500 locations worldwide with 30 locations already open in Arizona.
The Payson location should open at the end of April or early May.
The 4,000-square-foot gym will have cardio machines, strength training equipment and free weights. Each piece of equipment will have its own TV connected to DirecTV.
While members can use the Fitness on Request program to take classes after hours, Anytime Fitness will also offer classes with in-person trainers during staffed hours.
Eventually, Robert, a registered kinesiotherapist, exercise physiologist and certified strength and conditioning specialist, will offer rehabilitation services at the gym.
For the Gravings, opening their own gym is a dream come true.
“We had been looking for our own facility for a long time,” she said.
After researching Anytime Fitness and its successful business model, Kristen said they knew a franchise was the way to go. At the end of 18 months, the Gravings will own the club outright.
The Gravings have been involved in fitness for years, with Robert working as a personal trainer and physical therapist. Over time, Robert noticed that physical therapy clients frequently returned because they were not sticking with a workout plan. For some people, working out at a gym can be intimidating and this makes it hard to stick with a workout plan, Kristin said.
At Anytime Fitness, the atmosphere is relaxed and people of all fitness levels are welcome.
Since the gym is open 24 hours, seven days a week, including holidays, security is important. Only members with a swipe card have access, and surveillance cameras monitor activity. If there is a problem, panic buttons on the wall alert local police.
The Gravings are excited to open the gym and start their new lives in Payson. The couple moved to the Rim Country a month ago from Kalamazoo, Mich.
After vacationing in Payson for only a week, Kristen said they fell in love with the small-town atmosphere and the bright sunshine.
The couple is signing new members up out of a travel trailer in front of the gym during construction. The first 100 members to sign up pay no enrollment fee and the first 60 members get an Anytime Fitness goodie bag.
“We are already getting lots of positive responses from the community,” Kristen said.
