This past Monday, Tonto Village was again covered with snow. But first there was rain, about a half inch, which was sorely needed.
The snow accumulation was minimal, about an inch worth, but it sure made for a beautiful sight the next morning. Winter is not through with us yet! The calendar tells us that Sunday was the first full day of spring, but don’t be fooled by that. I can remember when I was about 8 or 9 years old and my mother said that it was the first day of spring, and I mistakenly thought that the flowers would be blooming, but in reality, there was about a foot of snow on the ground. How disappointing that was.
Hellsgate Fire Department
The Hellsgate Fireflies auxiliary held its workshop session this past Monday morning. At the Tonto Village fire station meeting room. Many ideas were discussed as to what projects the auxiliary wanted to pursue this coming year. The upcoming Memorial Weekend breakfast was refined as to menu and cost. Although the price of food has skyrocketed this year, the auxiliary has decided to keep the price of the breakfast at the low price of $5 for scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy and a beverage.
The auxiliary realizes that money is tight for everyone, but since this event is so successful, the breakfast should be a time for the people in the area get together and stay for a great breakfast fixed by Linda Stailey and her crew. Linda is known for her great food and wedding cakes But she is helped by many of the Fireflies. This event is a win-win for everyone. Mark your calendar for May 28 at 7:30 a.m. at the Hellsgate Tonto Village fire station.
Raffle tickets for one of the items that will be raffled off at the Labor Day Weekend barbecue were handed out to the auxiliary, namely, the ever-popular chain saw. This year the Husqvarna 20-inch chain saw known as the “Rancher” will be raffled off. Ask any auxiliary member for your chance to win this almost professional chain saw. A huge congratulations to firefighters Nick Degroot and Bobbie Fuller for the completion of the very difficult and time-consuming classes to become a certified paramedic. They both finished their classes with a respective 91 percent for Nick and 84 percent for Bobbie. The department and the auxiliary is very proud of them both for their dedication and perseverance to finish and be certified. The class graduation will be on April 8 in the Valley. Many of the firefighters will attend to congratulate Nick and Bobbie.
The very first art class of the year will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 4. The instructor will be artist Pamela Furubotten. Beginners are welcome and Pam will help with the basics. Mediums to be explored will be oil, acrylic, watercolors and pastels. The class will be held at the Tonto Village Chapel. I’m willing to give it a try, although I have no talent at all in this area!
