No (Controversy)-Free Lunch For Council Members

The Star Valley council’s penny-pinching ways stretched beyond next year’s budget Tuesday night when one councilor questioned the lunch bill for several other council members.

The issue arose from a budget line showing Town Manager/Attorney Tim Grier picked up the tab for lunch with council members twice in the last few months.

Councilor Gary Coon objected to letting taxpayers foot the bill, especially since it happened twice.

Councilors Barbara Hartwell and Paty Henderson reportedly met with Grier to discuss council issues at lunch because they both work and do not have time meet with him otherwise.

Hartwell defended herself saying this was the first time in three years she had met Grier for lunch.

“I don’t care if it’s twice in 20 years, it has been twice in two months,” Coon said.

“You know that is not the issue,” Hartwell replied.

Henderson said she was happy to pay for her own lunch and would do so in the future.

Mayor Bill Rappaport suggested the council pull the item off the consent agenda and vote on it at their next meeting. The council agreed.
