The American Legion Riders Fun Run for the Payson Supply Line fell a little short of its fund-raising goal, but discovered a broader base of community support.
Ted Kosnic, one of the organizers, said the event drew 50 riders and raised just over $6,000 this year — short of the $10,000 goal. All the money will go to the Payson Supply Line, which sends comfort and care items to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Kosnic said about 50 more residents contributed to the cause by joining the riders for breakfast and lunch, and buying raffle tickets.
The food received high marks, he said. The lunch and afternoon awards program also featured the blues music of the Blue Frog band.
Supporters donated all the food and other special items so all the money raised went to Payson Supply Line.
This year the club mailed 400 letters to alert area merchants, clubs and organizations. That mailing brought in at least 25 new contributors, Kosnic said. More than 40 local vendors donated to the event.
