Visitors Need To Know Of Fire Restrictions

What is going on with this crazy weather? Tuesday morning the temperature was 29 degrees in the Village!

I know that many of our residents have already started their summer gardens. I hope that they have covered the plants overnight. We have not planted any of our veggies yet, we have them inside on a sunny table with eastern exposure. We are hoping that one day next week we can plant all of them.

Fire restrictions

Fire restrictions for Tonto National Forest have begun as of Wednesday, May 11 at 8 a.m. The restrictions mean that building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or charcoal-burning device is prohibited. Restrictions also apply to smoking outside of a cleared area, operating internal combustion power tools, using welding equipment or torches with open flames, operating combustion engines without spark-arresting devices in effective working order, or discharging firearms except in taking game in accordance with Arizona hunting laws.

A reminder from the U.S. Forest Service that all fireworks are prohibited on all public land including national forest land at all times.

Violations of these restrictions is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 and imprisonment up to six months.

For more information regarding forest recreation sites and fire restrictions, please contact the Tonto National Forest at 602.225.5200. Or online at www.fs.usda. gov/tonto.

Please make sure that all visitors to the area know of these restrictions. Arizona already has three active forest fires, all human caused. We live in the forest so it is up to us to help keep everyone safe from forest fires by being aware of violations to the fire restrictions. If you see a campfire, call 911 to report it.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The Hellsgate brush crew and contracted companies through the Fuels Reduction Plan have completed the clearing of slash in the Diamond Point Summer Homes area. The clearing of other areas will continue in the next few weeks.

This is a very important project since the work gets rid of flammable materials around the homes and reduces the probability of fire in those areas.

The Hellsgate Fireflies is continuing to prepare for the first fund-raiser of the year with the Memorial Weekend Breakfast. The event will be held Saturday, May 28 at fire station #22 in Tonto Village. Breakfast includes sausage, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee for the very small fee of $5. There will also be a bake sale this year featuring brunch items including homemade jams and jellies, coffee cakes, buns, muffins, etc. There will also be live music by Larry Smith. All the good eats get started at 8 a.m. and will continue until 11 a.m. Raffle tickets will also be sold for a Husqvarna 20-inch chain saw, a $300 gift card for groceries, and a $200 gift card for gas. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be at the Labor Day weekend barbecue Saturday, Sept. 3. Tickets can be purchased from any of the Fireflies auxiliary ladies or at the breakfast.

Activities

The art class on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. is continuing. The class is being held at the Tonto Village Chapel. Samples of your artwork would be greatly appreciated. Each artist has their own style and it is helpful for novices to see the different techniques and mediums used.

Bible study is also ongoing at the Tonto Village Chapel on Thursday mornings at 11 a.m. with the theme “What the numbers in the Bible mean.” Everyone is welcome to learn of the fascinating way that numbers are connected to Bible verses.

Double D Doings

The nine-ball competition was held last Tuesday evening between the Tonto Village gals and the Christopher Creek gals. The games were won by Christopher Creek gal, Nancy Olson, but Tonto Village came through and won second and third place with Betty Koutz and Ethel Cain.
